When Kids Can't Read

My students need 3 sets of graphic novels so they can begin to become independent readers and they need a pencil sharpener that doesn't break after a few weeks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you see a movie in your mind when you read? Visualizing is for most an intrinsic part of the reading process, but for the English Language Learners in my classroom this isn't the case. I teach 7th and 8th grade English for "at risk" students in a high-need community of California.

I have a lot of reluctant readers in my classroom who are classified as dependent readers. Dependent readers can pronounce the words when they read, but they don't necessarily make sense of the text. For them reading is just a bunch of black symbols on a white page. This is a fundamental reading problem that is normally addressed in earlier grades. When students get to middle school however, and they can't read they tend to give up,become apathetic about their school work, and later will drop out. The district I teach in has a 53% dropout rate. According to research,it's estimated that dropouts cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars a year in lost income taxes and increased welfare and healthcare costs.

I need graphic novels that my students are interested in to help them to begin to visualize what they read. These Manga books are very popular with my students, but our school library doesn't have them. By adding these books to my classroom library I will be able to catch those dependent readers and turn them into independent readers who can visualize what they read and make sense of the text. This will enable them to carry these comprehension skills to other academic texts so that they can succeed in all academic areas. We also need a pencil sharpener in our classroom that enables students to sharpen pencils quickly and get on with their classwork.

Your help will ensure that my reluctant readers become enthusiastic readers, that my dependent readers become independent readers, and that my students will have the skills they need to read varied types of texts and stay in school. You will make it possible to close the achievement gap for these students.
