Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in a high-need community. My students come from varying backgrounds from those who have had preschool to those who have never held a pencil or been read a story prior to walking through my door. Meeting the needs of children with such a wide spectrum of abilities is a challenge I happily take on.
Regardless of experience, ALL children benefit from hands-on learning. These experiences solidify understanding and provide opportunities for practice with each skill. Unfortunately, most Math programs do not provide the number of manipulatives required to ensure that every student has ample time to practice their skills. This can be very frustrating to a teacher who wants every student to have as much time as they need to master these basic skills which are vital to their future Mathematical success!
My students need foam cubes for counting and patterning, foam geometric shapes to manipulate, peg boards for practicing basic skills such as patterning and sorting, and wipe-off number cards for numbers and counting practice. With these resources, every child in my classroom will have enough manipulatives to work with until basic skills are mastered.
