This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

100% of my learners receive free breakfast and lunch. Since June 2018, the district has qualified for the Community Eligible Provision (CEP) through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. In addition, many of my learners receive services that help to provide necessary support in myriad ways. Prior to this pandemic, my learners were involved in weekly choice reading assignments that helped build their skills and engagement.

These engaging reading assignments were easy to facilitate, because my classroom and school library provided the means to allow students to check out books; however, due to school closings my learners don't have books or the financial means to order books online.

My Project

What inspired me to start this project was a post from one of my learners which I am going to share with you. Unfortunately, many of my learners have reached out stating that they don't have books and that they don't have any way to acquire books.

I ordered and sent a copy of a book to a student today with a special note; she will receive it as a surprise - a little something to raise her spirits.

However, MANY students have reached out about not wanting to read online and not having books at home. They are overwhelmed by the online schooling platform and long to read a book in print. I cannot possibly afford to send a high-interest book to each learner who reaches out to me, and it breaks my heart because a good book could be just the distraction that many of them need.

After asking my learners: what is in your house for possible reading material? I received this:

I found the abundance of these cigarette adds very interesting due to the very drastic change on the view of them over the course of 35 years. In 1885 the marketing teams were practically cramming these adds down the consumers’ throats and now, it is very looked down upon if one were to smoke cigarettes.

Note: I currently have a lack of literature in my household.

Because of the example above (and many other stories that I could share), I will mail each book that I receive from Donors Choose with a special note to my learners in need. I will personally provide the money needed for shipping.
