Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in Long Branch, N.J. come from a wide range of backgrounds. 80% of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunch. They love to learn and are often first-generation high school graduates. Most go on to attend college, trade school, military, or the work force.
But what teenager truly knows what they want to do "when they grow up?" As the media specialist/librarian, I have become the confidant and mentor to many students.
Many do not know what they want to do when they graduate, so we offer books on different careers to read and research. Classes come in, pick a career and get to work.
I don't want them researching everything online, but to pick up a book and have the information at their fingertips! I love that they are communicating with each other while looking up answers about the career choices. But we need new career books! The ones we have are over ten years old. I would love to have new, vibrant, and updated books for them to use. They will be easily accessible to all students. I can't wait to see their faces when they see NEW career books on display.
My Project
Teenagers often have a tough time finding their passion and choosing a career path. Their options are endless, and the choices can be very overwhelming.
We can help them by exploring their interests and aptitudes with new career books.
What are some of the things they enjoy doing? What strengths do they possess? Are there certain areas in school where they excel? The answers can help steer them in the right direction.
From there, books make an ideal supplementary navigational tool. These books will help teenagers choose a career. They will help them decide what they want to do in the future. They are the future!
