My students are inquisitive and eager to learn. They ask lots of questions! They not only want to know how, but why they are learning the concepts in class. They want to know how concepts apply to the real world. The school has a diverse population of approximately 1300 middle school students. The students have varying backgrounds and learning abilities, but in science class, they are able to find a common ground and passion for learning. They work as a team to learn and teach each other in the classroom, and everyone is treated fairly and without prejudice.
My Project
This project was inspired by the Chemistry in Our World project. I love the idea of students seeking out professionals in the field of chemistry; however, my students are in middle school and transportation may be an issue for some of them. They still have so much to learn about the field of science and all that it has to offer that I want them to be able explore fields they might want to pursue when they grow up.
We are always asked the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" How are we supposed to know when we have no idea what is out there for us?
The field of science has so many facets for students to choose from, and I want my students to have the opportunity to explore the options.
Students will research science professions, and they will learn about pay scale, qualities best suited for the profession, education required, employment outlook, work environment and locations for the career of choice. As part of their research, they will be expected to interview someone in the field. They can conduct the interview in person, by phone or by email. They will then create a poster using the poster board, card stock, sharpies and rulers to present this information and share it with the class. Having the necessary materials will help the students feel successful in creating their poster as well as learn about the importance of having a visually appealing poster to catch the reader's attention. A question and answer session will take place at the end of each presentation and then the posters will be displayed in the school hallways for all students to view.
