When Big Feelings Happen to Little People

My Project

We are a Title I public elementary school in a large urban community in Missouri, the Show Me State.

Our school is comprised of gender-specific classrooms to maximize gender-based learning and teaching strategies.

Our classroom is composed of all boys. We have students from many different countries in our school providing lots of diversity within our building.

In Kindergarten, we work a lot on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as students learn to adjust to being away from their families, being around new peers, and following rules they never had to follow before like lining up quietly for the hall. Some of our littles have a difficult time in their adjustment and need a place to get away from the over stimulation of peers and the learning environment for a few minutes. We would like to create a peaceful, calming area of our classroom dedicated to this purpose and need your help to make this happen.

In creating our calming space, we would like to feature an aquarium so students who just need to take their minds off of their agitators can get lost in the tranquility of watching fish swim for a few minutes. For those who struggle with verbalizing their emotions, we would like the LEGO Social Emotional DUPLO set so those students may create a person with the face that best reflects their feelings at the moment. The building aspect will help students calm down and give them choices on which face to use, empowering them to communicate their emotions non-verbally. Thank you for helping us help our littles with their big emotions.
