I teach preschool students in a self-contained special education classroom. Our public separate school serves students with severe disabilities, age birth to 21 years old. Our students' determination and perseverance inspire us all every day!
Our classroom currently serves 7 students with significant health impairments and/or developmental delays that impact their motor skills, language, and cognition.
Students use assistive devices for mobility and adapted materials to support fine motor activities and communication. Some of our students also have impaired hearing and vision. My classroom team strives to support our students in gaining increased independence in their school environment.
Our district recently adopted the use of a new curriculum in our preschool EC classrooms. In order for my students to access and participate in planned activities, we carefully adapt materials and modify lessons to meet each student's individual needs.
My Project
Students who use a wheelchair to navigate the classroom will enjoy a wheelchair accessible table so they can learn to transition to group with increased independence. The horseshoe shape of the table will enable students to interact with peers and materials collaboratively during group time.
Common colds and viruses can lead to dangerous medical situations for students who are medically fragile.
Each of our students has faced and overcome many significant medical challenges during their young lives that have resulted in delays in physical development. A carpet sweeper will help us keep our classroom floor clean and safe throughout the school day as students learn to roll, scoot, and crawl, and sit up.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
