What’s Your Lung Capacity?

My students need 2 Portable Dry Spirometers and a pack of disposable mouth pieces to really appreciate and learn how lung volume measurements are made.

My Students

When students can participate first hand in doing lung function tests, both as “doctor” doing the test and as “ patient” getting the test performed, the learning experience is reinforced and expanded.

My students attend an urban high school with over 3000 students.

The school is considered a magnet school for science and math, but is also a Title One school. Many of my students are first generation Americans and are highly motivated and dedicated students who are interested in the medical field.

My Project

Using a lung spirometer, my students will learn the ins and outs of good healthy breathing. They will learn how much air (in liters) they can take into their lungs, then compare it to that of other students of different ages and heights. They will also understand the significance of lung volume in all its stages, including regular breath, deep breath in, breath at rest, and force breath out. With this tool, a total respiratory function analysis is created for each student to be graphed, interpreted and discussed. This hands-on scientific approach will give my students a tangible medical skill that will show them how important it is to integrate theory into practice. We spend weeks learning about lung anatomy and function, and discuss in great detail corresponding problems. In addition, this will enhance student understanding of why respiratory disorders appear as they do and the physiological ramifications will then be discussed in class.

My class focuses on pathophysiology for high school students interested in the medical professions.

We cover a variety of medical maladies. My students act out different medical scenarios as part of the diagnostic/triage process, and we use real medical tools when possible to assess blood pressure, heart rate, etcetera. One item we do not have that would contribute to broader understanding of cardio-pulmonary interaction is a lung volume measurement device (spirometer).
