What's the Time?

My students need analog and digital all-in-one clocks with and without gears as well as teaching clocks with analog and digital faces.

My Students

I constantly get asked "What time is it?" or "What time do we have lunch?" If my students could practice telling time, I could answer more pressing questions, like "What molecules make up water?" Ok, so maybe my first graders won't ask that, but you get the idea.

My students have a passion for learning, one I have not seen in quite some time.

They are constantly asking question after question to gain more knowledge and they don't stop until they have an answer that makes sense. My students also like their independence. Even though they are first graders, they attend a very rigorous charter school in our nation's capitol and they are learning how to find answers on their own using the knowledge they have. I like to give my students as much independence with their learning as I can. In order to do so, I need to set them up for success with the right tools and concepts.

My Project

Telling time is a skill students will need for the rest of their lives. The materials I have requested will help students see the relationship between the minute hand and hour hand on an analog clock as well as the relationship between an analog clock and a digital clock. The student clocks will allow the students to interact with time. The teaching clocks will allow me to show the students how to read time, how to write time, and how to understand time.

Time is an interesting concept.

It is hard for first graders to grasp it fully. With this project, I know my students will be able to not only read and write the time, but actually understand the conceptual parts of time. They will never be late for an appointment or meeting once they know how to tell time!
