it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This school year, many of my students are returning from three years of interrupted schooling - a third grade year cut in half by COVID, a year of online learning, and a year of in-person learning with disrupted attendance due to the pandemic. As a consequence, I have a large number of students who are emerging readers and developing their decoding skills. Thankfully, our school has been proactive in supporting these students with small group phonics lessons, which has accelerated their progress. At the same time, these students should be reading books at their independent reading level for at least 30 minutes daily. They read 15 minutes every morning in Homeroom, another 15 minutes in their intervention block, and are encouraged to check out books to read at home.
For many students, but especially students who struggle with reading, finding an enjoyable series can make all of the difference in building a love for the written word.
Many of my students have eagerly devoured the series that are currently available in my classroom, and have been asking me for more. I am constantly hearing from students, "Do you have another one?" When I am able to respond in the affirmative, students become even more excited to continue the stories of the favorite characters.
With this Donor's Choose project, I am hoping to fund the purchase of a large variety of books from series that my students already love - from Diary of a Wimpy Kid to the Sports Illustrated graphic novel series. I know that these books will instantly fly off the shelves, helping my students to build more excitement around reading as they grow their decoding skills. I appreciate all of your support in helping my most vulnerable students continue to find success and joy in reading!
