My students need a document camera and a pc notebook to acquire a formidable science background and continue to improve their English, Microsoft Windows and a laptop case.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ever traveled to a foreign country only to learn that your phrase book was not very helpful? An equally difficult task is also faced by second language learners who must quickly acquire a second language while learning challenging subject matter like science.
My 18 students go to a school that serves over 900 students in grades K-6.
This bustling school is housed in an urban community with high poverty. About 95% of students here are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Many of our students spend much of their day here and have found a welcoming place to enjoy a hot meal and a safe place to be after school.
One can see why it would be very easy to go unnoticed in such an overwhelming school setting. Growing up under difficult circumstances draw out the survival instinct in some students or the desire to flee in others. Let's give hope to those students that need it most and aid them by giving them the technology to inspire their learning.
My hope is that by engaging my students with fun, inquiry based learning projects in science they will be on their way to acquiring academic English. It is well documented that students learn language best while using it in context. Also, reading dry subject matter can be enhanced with technology.
My Project
Making science content comprehensible is a difficult task to achieve and even more so when it involves elementary-aged English learners. Why not give future generations the inspiration to excel in fields where they are historically under represented? Effectively using modern technology such as a document camera and a pc notebook to teach students the inquiry process in science will go a long way toward producing a future generation of skilled workers.
The portable notebook computer and document camera will complete the technology that has already been donated by DonorsChoose donors. Teacher demonstration is a key part of the inquiry process and will be enhanced by technology. Further, grade level vocabulary and concepts are presented online. Students will begin a series of inquiry based lessons where they will explore matter in the form of liquids and solids. Finally, students will keep a science journal where they will document their findings and detail the procedures they've learned.
Let's inspire young students of color to participate and to excel in fields where they have been historically under served.
These students would be well served to acquire an enviable work ethic and the attitude that learning can be fun. Infusing science instruction with modern technology can go a long way towards inspiring future generations of mathematicians or scientists.
