This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the media specialist and the technology coordinator, I teach information literacy and technology to K-8 students on the Southwest Side of Chicago.

My students are eager learners who are capable of engaging in learning on a whole new level if given the chance.

Technology gives each of my students a voice and a launchpad for their creativity. They love coming to the lab to use the technology available to them.

We are a Title I, local community school, and 95% of our school population is considered low-income. Most of our students do not have access to the newest and most advanced technology at home, and many can not regularly afford an internet connection. Thus, while they are at school they are eager to use technology in any way they can!

My Project

I would love to be able to teach my youngest students computational thinking using hands-on robotics. There are terrific online programs for introducing even the youngest learners to computational thinking and I use many of them. But I have discovered that nothing compares to a hands-on approach to teaching using robotics. Bee-Bots is the solution.

Bee-Bots would allow my young students to investigate, problem solve and create to achieve success.

Bee-Bots are small programmable robots designed for younger children. In the last decade, it has been acknowledged that computer science and coding need to be a part of elementary students' curriculum. I believe that Bee-Bots would be a great starting point for my students that would encourage future interest in computer science!
