Help me give my students beekeeping equipment including safety gear (suit, veil, and gloves), hive maintenance tools, and a wooden bee box to care for and give a home to bees at our school.
My students are curious learners, constantly asking questions, digging deeper, and trying to understand the world around them. They seek meaning rather than just comprehension, and are willing to do the work to get there. As an Environmentally focused school, my students are also always on the lookout for better ways to keep our planet and ourselves healthier.
These are kids who care--they care about the world around them and how their actions impact more than just themselves.
When an answer isn't simple or straight-forward, we learn how to use science in order to gather information and make positive changes for our school and our community.
My Project
Nothing gets students more excited about learning than a hands-on project, especially one that gets them outside! As an environmental STEM school, we place great value on project-based learning, as well as incorporating the natural world whenever possible. At our school, nature is truly the best teacher, and this project will allow the purchasing of all the supplies necessary to welcome a hive of bees as a part of our "teaching staff."
Keeping honeybees is a truly unique experience, making core subjects like math and science come to life.
Students will help set up the perfect home for our insect visitors, and learn not just best practices as Jr Beekeepers, but also have a chance to observe nature's engineering at its finest, insect life cycles, and much more.
Honeybees maintain a complex and cooperative community within their hives--something that we as teachers strive to accomplish within our own classrooms. When working with bees, students will have not just a hands-on opportunity to learn, but they will also be able to see, understand, and appreciate the relevancy of their work not just in their own lives, but in the broader community and world.
