This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All students are special and deserving of a good education!

The unique group of students that I am teaching are of high need, in high poverty but eager to learn.

They struggle every day trying to overcome basic needs. They live in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. They are funny, sweet and hopeful. These students are unfortunately at-risk to high crime, poverty, homelessness, unemployment, poor health, poor fitness and poor nutrition, patiently waiting for them outside of the school gates.

My students come from many countries, so they are also learning the English language and customs of this wonderful country. The opportunity to participate in free after-school sports activities is invaluable.

My Project

Students arrive at school without brushing their teeth or hair, putting on deodorant, or even washing their faces and hands in the morning. Their lack of hygiene makes it embarrassing for some, especially after their physical education classes and students make fun of how they smell. This project will allow me to teach them about personal hygiene, health and provide them with those needed not available to many at home. I will create goody bags to give to the student after teaching them about personal hygiene. I will invite the school counselor to participate in the discussion.

Good hygiene habits involve more than just hand-washing.

I want to have available for all students deodorant, body lotion, tissue, toothbrushes and toothpaste, combs, face wipes, soap, and pretty hairbows. Teaching students to have a healthy hygiene routine when they’re young can create habits that last throughout their lives.
