My Students
As students from low-income/high poverty areas, I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. They have come to our school due to the challenges they have faced in the regular school setting and have not done well.
Our program strives to help these students by giving them the social, emotional, and educational tools they will need in order to function and hopefully thrive in a regular school setting after completing their time with us, which will allow them to complete their schooling with their peers.
My Project
My classroom has been needing new dictionaries for some time however, they have not been a priority for replacement by the school when so many other basic needs had to be bought.
With these new dictionaries, my students will learn how to find the meaning of new words, help develop language and spelling skills, without the use of technology.
Knowing how to use a dictionary is a necessary academic skill that has fallen by the wayside since smartphones have become available.
However, as my students come from low economic backgrounds, smartphones are not always available to them, but books always can be.
