My students need a classroom set (26) of Toobaloos, an instrument to help children listen to what they are reading as the class also reads out loud.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Smith's classroom raised $158
This project is fully funded
I teach at a regular neighborhood public school. I teach second grade. I am constantly seeing a need to vary and boost Reading skills.
One area I would like to work on improving is reading fluency. I do a few things now, such as children reading individually with a parent in the hall, and also Readers' Theater. I am searching for another way to practice and assess my students' fluency in a low stress environment.
The Toobaloo, also called a Whisper phone, is simply a small bent pipe which will allow the student to read quietly out loud, or even whisper reading text and be able to hear it clearly.
I believe the Toobaloo will help with practice and assessing student reading fluency. I can have the class quietly read text into their individual phones. These allow them to hear themselves and filter out other classroom noise. I can also zero in on individuals and listen to them. That way I know they are reading it themselves and not mimicking what they hear classmates read.
As a teacher, I would like to do all that I can to encourage Reading skills. I believe this project will give me one more tool in that endeavor.
