FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Will's classroom raised $463
This project is fully funded
When is the last time you curled up with a cup of tea, a blanket, and a big, fat textbook? It's probably been awhile. Textbooks are not generally on the top of most reading lists. So why do we use them so much in school? If adults don't enjoy textbooks, what makes us believe struggling readers and writers are going to get anything out of them? Textbooks are quite simply not enough.
We this is true, but Science, Math, Physical Education, and History teachers across the nation still find it difficult to give students time to read in their content-areas. These teachers have hefty textbooks that they are supposed to get through each year, standardized tests that the students are expected to do well on, and plenty of content to teach. They just don't have the time to build content-area libraries and give the students time in class. Many of them wish their students would read about math, science, sports, or history but don't know how to get the students to do it. Harvey Daniels, a revolutionary educator, believes content-area reading is so important that he published a book about it called "Subjects Matter." Every book I am asking for (except for the eyewitness books) comes from a list of recommended reading published in that book.
I decided to do something about this problem. I have talked with the teachers from different disciplines at my school about it, and we've come up with a solution. I will be introducing the other teachers to strategies introduced in "Subjects Matter" to assist them with blending non-textbook reading in their classes. I am going to build a "content" library in my classroom. Students will be able to check these books out from me during self-selected reading and teachers in other content areas can expect the students to report back once a month on their "content-area" book. This way, the students will be able to read those books during my class and talk about them in their other classes.
I teach in a school for struggling students. Most of our students never graduated eighth grade but were put in high school anyway because of their age. Some of our students came to us right from sixth grade. They have had tough experiences, but are now working very hard to get back on track. Content area reading is especially important for these students, because this is how we create lifelong readers.
About 175 students each school year will use these materials. I am asking for a collection of non-fiction books on topics related to science, history, math, and physical education. This project will help our students get excited about school and about reading. Thanks so much for considering this project. My students and I truly appreciate it.
