My students need 23 tickets to attend a live performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre. It is a small theatre, and all seats are great!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a neighborhood high school in Philadelphia. I strive to bring meaningful and diverse experiences to my students. We have a collaborative and cooperative classroom, in which the students have a definitive role in decision-making and guiding their education.
My students are absolutely amazing!
I teach English 4, and Introduction to Journalism. My students are articulate, intelligent, responsible, and creative. They have many opportunities to participate in and guide class discussions, and I love hearing all of their thoughts and ideas!
Our school has many programs available to the students, including diverse academic courses, athletic offerings, and the best Career and Technical Education program in the school district! There are many neighborhood and city partnerships housed in the school. These partnerships provide additional supports to our students, and help the students succeed and achieve their goals.
My Project
I am so excited about the prospect of taking my students on a trip to the theater, with the generous support through Donors Choose! The Philadelphia Shakespeare theater is a unique space, with only 120 seats in a 3/4 thrust stage. The actors are close to the audience, with the stage a mere foot off of the ground, and no more than 2 feet from each of the 3 front rows! I have taken small groups of students to see performances at this theater in past years, and it has always been a positive experience.
If you are reading this, please think back to your high school English classes. Did you read Shakespeare? With pleasure, or a sense of dread? I tell my students that it is completely different seeing Shakespeare performed right in front of you (sometimes only a foot in front of you!). Reading Shakespeare does not do justice to the words.
Let's work together to bring Shakespeare to life for my amazing students! Let's march to the beat of the iambic pentameter, all the way to the theatre!
If this project is fully-funded, 23 students will attend a live performance of "Romeo and Juliet." 23 students will see Shakespeare's work as they have never seen it before.
23 students will see a theater in Philadelphia that they have never seen before. How exciting is that?! And you can be part of that experience with your generosity!
Now, as someone once said, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." With that, I will close by saying "Thank you, in advance!"
