I teach high school biology in an inner city public school. Unfortunately we do not have a budget to buy most lab supplies.
My students are already asking if we are going to have the opportunity to dissect frogs this year. My students learn best with real-life application of biology. As our science laboratory is extremely under-stocked, we cannot afford to let our students participate in this classic biology lab project. By giving the students the opportunity to participate in this dissection, I feel my students will get a first hand experience looking at an organism, tissues, and organs. They will also have the hands on labs they crave, and will be more excited about biology class.
I try my best to prepare my students for college science classes. Several of these classes include labs such as dissection of various specimen.
I would love to give my students the experience of dissection. This lab will let them apply many of the concepts from class by examining a preserved specimen. This will also allow them the chance to dissect before going to college with much more difficult labs including dissection of cats, fetal pigs, and cadavers.
When you remember your high school biology experience, you always think of dissecting a frog. I want to give my students the opportunity to do a lab that most students in other schools already do every year. Thank you for support of science education in public schools!
