This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever tried listening to a story right next to a classmate and found yourself confused about which story you are listening to, whether your own or your classmate's story? Well, that's exactly what is happening to my students because of lack of headphones.
Since my students lack headphones, they find themselves many times listening to all their neighbors stories besides their own when they are utilizing our classroom listening center.
At the end they are so confused and can't even remember the story they were supposed to listen to nor the skill they needed to have learned from listening to their own story.
My students are English Language Learners attending a public school in California. Our school is a Title 1 school and the majority of the students qualify for free lunch. They come from low income families where both parents work in order to maintain their household.
Because of the fact my students come from low income families that are barely making ends meet with their personal expenses, I find it difficult to place an additional burden on them by asking them to purchase headphones for their children. Therefore, I am taking it upon myself to write this project request in order to be able to provide them with headphones.
My Project
My students use the classroom listening center in order to listen to stories read to them by fluent readers in order to help them increase their word recognition abilities, fluency, and for vocabulary acquisition. They also use the listening center to listen to stories and answer reading comprehension questions individually. Since all my students are at different reading levels they do not listen to the same stories at the same time. The listening center provides differentiated passages for them to listen to. Unfortunately, since we don't have headphones my students become distracted and confused because they are not only listening to their individual stories, but to those of all the other students.
With the headphones my students will be able to listen to their individual story without the distraction of being able to hear their classmate's story at the same time. This will let them focus on acquiring word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills.
My students need headphones because it is really hard for them to listen to their own differentiated stories when they are listening to multiple stories at the same time.
With your generous donations my students will be able to pay attention to fluent readers reading their reading level appropriate story, pay attention to words being read and highlighted in their own story, answer comprehension questions, and will become fluent readers as a result of acquiring important literacy skills.
