Eighty eight percent of the students at our school receive free or reduced lunch and do not have real world experiences to connect their learning to. The availability of hands-on, real life examples would be a much needed key for the vast majority of our students to retain the information being taught in the classroom. I teach 100 6th grade students and the the materials can be used for the many years.
Hands on, real life experiences can be expensive. I have been working very diligently to obtain these much need materials for our students.
With these real life experiences our students will retain information that they are trying so hard to learn. Doing an activity lasts longer in the memory than merely reading about it. By having actual mini habitats in the classroom, students will be making the necessary real world connections they need to learn essential science benchmarks. The woodland and pond live biomes are real examples on a smaller scale. Student will also have visual example that they can manipulate. Photosynthesis is a difficult concept to grasp and by providing a model students are 90% more likely to retain this valuable information.
The fact that these real life examples exist is a wonderful thing. The support they create to a learning environment is priceless. The the truth is...it's expensive. Please help us out!
