This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from a high poverty area. They long to have experiences they usually don't have. My students come from a variety of different homes and backgrounds. They love studying how different things work. This is why it is important for us to teach in a variety of different ways and to help those who don't have a chance to understand boats play a part in our lives and their importance.
Many of my students have only traveled on land, so it is important to tell them about other modes of transportation, especially boats.
This activity will be very enjoyable for the students, as well as teach them not only about how a boat floats but how many boats were inspired by nature.
My Project
I love bringing science into my reading lessons. We will read a story about many different types of boats and what makes them go. They will learn the parts of boats and find out what animals/fish were the inspiration for them.
We will create boats with the kits, design them, decorate them, and put them together.
Once we have put the boats together, we will see if they sink or float. Then we will test them in a boat race! At the end of this unit, students will be able to tell me the parts of a boat and what makes them float!
