This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture this, a classroom full of students trying to improve their reading fluency and comprehension scores during Independent Work Time by timing themselves reading, using the minute hand on our classroom clock or by sharing 1 of 3 sand timers. Doesn't make for productivity!

My students live in a low-income area and attend an inner-city school where 99% are eligible for free lunches.

They come from homes of hard-working parents who are struggling to make ends meet; where Spanish is spoken and English is the second language. Despite those challenges, my goal-oriented, hardworking students come to school eager to learn and continue the path towards higher education.

My Project

With digital timers for each individual child, my students can focus on their reading instead of continuously glancing over at a sand timer or clock to see if the 1 minute is up (they have 1 minute to read a passage 5 times). We also use timers to practice math facts. Since 100% of the students I teach are English Language Learners, a fun way for them to learn proper English grammar and sentence structure would be with games! What child doesn't love to play games during class? The Sentence Building and Grammar Board Games would help reinforce the lessons I've taught in a fun and interesting way.
