This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom population mostly consists of Hispanic and African-American students who participate in the free lunch program. Many students are English Language Learners and many receive special education services.
My students are inquisitive, creative and optimistic.
They show up ready to learn and ask meaningful questions. They also enjoy discussing what they have read and writing journal entries.
Attending school is a first step toward success. Although my students may face obstacles, it does not deter them from following their dreams. They aspire to become pediatric registered nurses, entrepreneurs, journalists, veterinarians and more!
My Project
Students in the 10th grade honors classes have read paper copies of poetry, short stories, and articles. They have practiced identifying the central idea and learned how character and word choice contribute to the overall tone of the text. In some instances, students developed their own quick write prompts.
Now it is time for students to think critically about how the structure of a play such as A Raisin in the Sun adds depth to character development and enhances the events that take place in the text.
We need a class set of A Raisin in the Sun. Students will continue to engage in close readings, class discussions and text-based responses. Reading and holding the actual book will provide students with a personal connection to what they are reading and build a community of active readers.
