Imagine a classroom full of hard working students. These students read and write voraciously. Sometimes a student needs to know the meaning of a word, or wants to find a synonym for a word in their writing. Most teachers would be able to provide their students with a dictionary or a thesaurus. Unfortunately, the dictionaries and thesauruses in my classroom are torn in half, missing covers, and incredibly tattered. This is why I am asking for a set of dictionaries and thesauruses for my students to use.
My school is in the inner city of Chicago. My students face seemingly insurmountable obstacles every day. They deal with violence and poverty on a daily basis. They must travel past gangs and drug dealers to come to school. After all of this, they enter a building that cannot supply them with the materials they need to learn. It seems to me that these are the schools that require the most up to date resources, but somehow the best resources go to schools in the suburbs. My students notice the discrepancy and feel that society has left them behind. These resources will make a small dent in helping them realize that not everyone has forgotten about them.
