What is this Place Called Earth, and What is Beyond It?
My students need a Weather and Solar System Activity Tubs & Learning Center, Seasons & Weather and Solar System book libraries, a Solar System Mobile Kit, and a Water Kit.
Louise Boyd Cadwell said, "In the Reggio Emilia preschools, however, each child is viewed as infinitely capable, creative, and intelligent. The job of the teacher is to support these qualities and to challenge children in appropriate ways so that they develop fully."
This year, I have 30 Kindergarten active students, who attend school year-round with an extended-day program, Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M.
to 5:00 P.M. Although 92% of the students come from low-income households, we try to provide every opportunity for them to learn and excel. Within our class, we have a variety of learners, including kinesthetic, tactile, naturalist, and visual learners. My students enjoy engaging in hands-on activities and are curious to learn about the world around them and what is beyond the stars.
In order to help my students develop fully, challenge them, and fulfill the Illinois standard: Know and apply concepts that describe how living things
interact with each other and with their environment, I created a unique, hands-on Science unit to fulfill their need to learn more about the Earth and Sky.
My Project
However, my students need resources in order to carry out this unit and provide a solid knowledge base about the Earth and Sky to create their own solar system models and engage in water experiments. If this grant is funded, my students will be able to build fluency and comprehension about weather, seasons, the Earth, and the solar system with Science learning libraries. They will be able to learn more about the water cycle with the Wonderful Water Backpack Kit. Students will be able to work independently or in small groups with the Weather & Seasons Instant Learning Center and Theme Tub--questioning, experimenting, recording observations, and discussing their findings about the Earth. They will learn about and interact with planets using the Solar System tub and learn about how the planets revolve around the sun using the Solar System mobile. After interacting with these resources, they will create a book and group project based on what they learned about the Earth & Solar System.
With your donation, my students will be able to discover what the Earth's resources, its water cycle, seasons, and its place in the solar system, in addition to increasing their fluency with nonfiction books about Earth, Weather, and Space.
Please help my students fulfill their need to learn about the Earth & Sky!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
