This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Pre-K to 2nd Grade Elementary school which services two housing developments allocated for low income families. One hundred percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Our students are growing up in an urban environment and have very few opportunities to leave or experience anything beyond a two-mile radius from their houses.
There are 150 first graders divided into seven classrooms with between 17 to 22 students in each. Two of the classrooms are special education inclusion classrooms, while the rest of the classes are general education.
My Project
Growing up in an urban environment, our students do not have first-hand experience of life outside of the city. This field trip will show students a very different world from what they at home.
Our First Grade students will experience a day of farm life.
They will enjoy a picnic on the farm. Then students will venture into a field to hand-pick strawberries. Afterwards, they will observe and discuss the value of honeybees. Students will then visit the farm's barn to observe different characteristics of farm animals. Finally they will enjoy a tractor-pulled hayride to tour the farm and discuss how farmers plant, nurture, and harvest crops.
