I am very grateful to work with such a fantastic group of fourth graders. There are more than six different languages spoken in my classroom alone. These happy, curious and eager students walk into my classroom everyday willing to do their best despite some of the hardships that are happening right outside their front door and in their daily lives.
Our school is an urban public school that services over 800 students from Pre-k to 4th grade.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 80% of our students receiving free lunch or reduced lunch. Many of our students receive food backpacks each weekend. We offer several clubs and organizations like GirlStart, Sister to Sister, Brother to Brother, Dare to Dream, G.A.P. and Young Leaders of Tomorrow just to name a few. These extracurricular activities promote and encourage academic success as well as foster positive social skills and build meaningful relationships. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Houston metro area with students who speak a variety of languages. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics, as well.
With this Virtual Reality set, my students will really be able to visualize the concepts being taught and provide a more meaningful understanding of the things around us. We will have access to visiting space, animals, national landmarks, the rain forest and even inside the human body!
Students will be able to see up close and personal an animal going through its transformation or walk through the White House right from our very own classroom.
Hurricane Harvey may have interrupted our school year but it did not stop our desire to learn all we can in school.
This project will allow them to travel to distant places and see different things rather than just reading about it from a book or magazine. They would now be able to read about it and experience it in virtual reality. This will open the world up for many of my students who would not be able to experience these places or things due to a low socio-economic status. My students deserve a chance to be exposed to the world in all its grandeur.
