Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help me get these kids thinking about things they have never heard of!! My students just don't have the opportunities to learn about anything outside of their immediate life except at school. They come from high poverty, low educational supports, and limited English language households.
My school tries very hard to expose our students to things beyond their own immediate life.
My job is to provide opportunities for learning that go beyond just test preparation. I want my students to have Time for Kids to increase their knowledge of current events both nationally and globally. Nonfiction text is very difficult to comprehend with students who are limited English language and have no prior knowledge to world issues. I want to change that.
My Project
We used to get Time for Kids the last few years and I thought we would have it for this year too. In the past, it was extremely helpful and something the kids really enjoyed using. They had debates, discussions, projects, and other interests that took off just from the current topics. However, due to a spending freeze in my district, we can't order them. It's already December...if I can get this funded the kids will be able to use and enjoy the materials shortly after the new year. What a great way to encourage positive global citizenship!!
If I don't get the donations, I won't be able to have these materials.
The vivid pictures, articles, activities, and games really speak to my 4th graders and put current events on a level that they can really work at to understand. It also gives them a taste of the outside world and where their learning can take them in the future.
