I teach juniors and seniors at a career-oriented public school. Specifically, my courses include American literature, world literature, and Advanced Placement Literature.
Getting students to love reading is important to me. I try to keep up with the interests of my students and suggest books or create assignments that will make students fall in love with reading. I want to revise my novel assignment for world literature. I want my students to get into groups and select a region of the world. Each student will read a different title written by or about someone from this area. With the current events surrounding the Middle East, this area is of interest to my students; however, neither my classroom nor school library includes many titles from this region. I would like to make more books available for my students for this assignment and for self-selected reading.
I need nonfiction and fiction books related to the Middle East for my students. The students who select these books for their assignments will receive a glimpse into this culture and discuss what they learned with their classmates. These books, however, will not be available only to my world literature students. They will be available for my other students to select as independent reading, which will help them reach their goal of reading ten books in English this year.
By donating to my grant, you will ensure that my students have an opportunity to learn about an area that is usually only heard about on the nightly news. You will make it possible for them to see the complexities of life within this area and to understand current events better.
