This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 8th grade students are inquisitive, interactive and interested in the layers of history they study in middle school. They come from various backgrounds, as well as knowledge base and abilities - from IEPs to English Language learners to GATE students. They learn about the past from primary source documents, textbooks, and novels. Historical fiction novels help students learn history in story form with characters who come to life and teach about our past.

Students love stories and are curious about the "what ifs" as they study the past.

They identify with characters who defy the odds and overcome obstacles, yet live "ordinary" lives. Students gain insight, knowledge and appreciation from our past when history is interwoven with novels.

My Project

A combination of English Language Arts and History makes up a middle school CORE class. Adding a novel to our curriculum that takes a chapter in history and portrays it in an alternative scope will help students understand the event with a "what if" ending. Reading and studying a variety of historical perspectives can help students learn from the past, appreciate the present and move forward into their future.

Understanding the past is a key to understanding the present.

As students dig deeper into the past, they see history as a way to make meaning of their daily lives and how the past and present are interconnected.
