My Students
Our 9th graders are students who are entering our high school full of dreams. Through literature, the 9th grade English team helps students understand the value of their dreams and the impact they can make in society. "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry is a text that we teach every year to help students begin mapping out their dreams and aspirations. Our students believe that it's never too early to start chasing their high school and college career goals.
My Project
My students will read "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry to help promote tolerance. The text allows students to compare housing discrimination among non-whites in 1950s Chicago and today in NYC. In addition, character analysis papers will help students explore tolerance related to discrimination, sexism, and assimilation in America. This is truly a text that teaches social justice in a time where my students need it the most.
Our incoming 9th graders at Frederick Douglass Academy use "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry each year to help them understand their dreams and aspirations for high school and college.
The students learn to think critically and write text analysis responses and argument essays that prepare them for the NY State Regents exam. Since 15 classes have shared 30 books for many years, we are now in need of new copies. Our students enjoy reading "A Raisin in the Sun" because it is the first play many of them have read. Your donation will allow us to continue inspiring our freshman with literature.
