"I want freckles, too!" cried students who participated in their school Freckle Juice project. Our school is all about being creative to meet student needs. We are located in a high-need, urban community that serves at-risk students from a variety of different backgrounds. We have about 650 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. I am a third grade teacher who is responsible for teaching all subject areas to students in a heterogeneous classroom.
Last year, I read the novel Freckle Juice with my class. Once we started reading the book, the students absolutely loved it and wanted to keep reading more. Unfortunately, I had limited copies of the book and had to disappoint students who wanted to continue reading the novel. Students were able to engage in many meaningful small group discussions with their classmates that allowed them to analyze the book and characters. They created their own commercial to sell Freckle Juice and developed recipes for a contest of the best juice.
In order to make this project possible, I need a class set of the book Freckle Juice along with a teacher resource guide. We will use paint as a prop to create freckles for our oral performances. This project will allow our entire group of third grade students to have access to a book and enable them to participate in a literature unit where they can strengthen reading comprehension and fluency, analyze characters, develop and perform skits, express themselves in writing, and participate in panel discussions. We will rotate the materials throughout six classrooms which will reach approximately 120 third grade students. They will develop as readers and participate in an experience that will be a focal point in their third grade school year. Students will also conduct research to learn more about freckles.
Your support of this project will ensure students have access to a popular novel they love reading and that will help strengthen life-long reading skills. Your generous donation will help bring a book to life and create excitement for reading. Please make this project possible and help kick off a brand new school year for our third grade students! I appreciate your support of this project.
