My Students

My classroom is a wonderful world of discussion, exploration, and creation. The students are driven to learn, and this includes learning about the world around us. They are eager to become contributing members to our community and work toward that goal every day.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds.

We are located in Hawaii, which is home to people from a plethora of different countries. Our school services the absolute lowest to no income families in the area, and these are the students who need the most support.

My Project

Although the majority of my students' families struggle, my students come to school every day not only ready to learn, but demanding knowledge. These children see that they are the masters of their own future and know that knowledge is the key to success. Because of this, I am requesting thesauruses for my classroom. My students do not just want to learn from me, they also want to learn to be their own teachers. These thesauruses will help my students in a many different forms of learning. Not only will they learn what new words mean from the dictionary aspect, but they will also enrich vocabulary by learning how many words hold similar meaning. There is nothing more precious to give a child than the sense of independence and knowledge that they CAN be successful on their own.

This project will help improve my classroom by allowing my students to proactively help themselves succeed.

We do a lot of writing, and many times a day I answer the same question, "What other word can I use here?" Rather than just providing my students the answers, I would like to provide them with the opportunity to find the answers on their own. This will help them take a leadership role in their education.
