My students need 15 copies of the book What Einstein Kept Under His Hat to encourage them to read more. The book is extremely interesting and my feeling is that they will want to read it!

My Students
My Advanced Placement group for this upcoming school year is already hard at work... and school doesn't start for another month! They have been coming in to school over the course of a few days to start working on chemistry. We've reviewed some concepts and done some lab work to get their brains in the back-to-school mode that will be necessary all too soon! I had most of these students in the first year chemistry course so I know most of them fairly well.
Not all of these students have the resources to get the most out of their education.
These students deserve to have the materials needed to ensure a successful high school experience as we prepare them for college and beyond!
My Project
At the AP Summer Institute that I just attended, our instructor encouraged us to have our students read more. She gave each of us a copy of the book "What Einstein Kept Under His Hat: Secrets of Science in the Kitchen" and it's been a very interesting read. One may think of these things but not necessarily go look up the answer when it springs to mind. For example; For your coffee to be hottest when you drink it... is it best to add cream to your coffee immediately or wait a few minutes?
Even though this book is about science, the format is very approachable (it is Q&A about science in the kitchen).
Students wouldn't feel the pressure of reading lengthy chapters as most questions are answered in a page or two, either keep reading or pick it up again later!
I'd like to provide each student with a copy of the book and have them pick out a couple of the questions that really intrigued them as they read it. There are also multiple recipes in the book - I made the chai tea tonight - and I would encourage them to try some of those as well (and share!). It is a book that I think they will pick up and read without having to assign reading - it is that interesting!
