My Students
I teach at a specialized math and science high school in New York City. Students must take an entrance exam even though it is a public school. The students of my school are so inquisitive, and have such a drive to learn, This is evident when looking at their full schedules and packed after school activities. These are some of the best and brightest students in all of New York City, and they make going to work every day a JOY!
My Project
Students come to high school with an understanding that DNA is a double helix molecule.
But is DNA simply a double helix?
It is very difficult for our students to accept that within the cell DNA is much more complex that the simple double helix. That is why I am requesting to the Nucleosome Models. I believe that when the students hold in their hands a 3-D model of compacted DNA they will be able to link their past knowledge on DNA structure with the new information gained in my class.
This is true for the Ribosome model as well. I can tell the class many times that the Ribosome is a large molecular machine, but to hold a model in your hands and see the LARGE number of amino acids that make it up, and the numerous protein chains that interact, I believe will help to make that understanding more concrete.
And these models can be shared among all 18 Biology teachers at the school for years to come! Helping us to improve the education of hundreds of students each year!
