My Students

Do you remember this phrase, 'Do you see what I see?' Well all students do not see everything in the same way because of their own background knowledge and experiences therefore much practice is needed to becoming a keen observers.

My second graders attend a Title 1 urban school.

Each class has approximately 30 students, with no assistance. The majority of our students aren't on grade level, but eager to learn when given the right mix of encouragement and support from both parents and teachers. School is often a safe haven or retreat for most because it gives them a place to just be child and leave their worries momentarily.

My Project

Observation is an important tool for scientist performing investigative science. Our students need to also hone in on their observation skills by using all of their senses and taking time to really "see" what it is they are observing to the very last detail. Second graders have very limited background knowledge and experience therefore it is crucial will develop their observational skills. The jewelers' loups are just the right size for our inquisitive students because they are accessible, portable and with an ocular lens help the students stay focus. When students are given time and opportunity to observe, illustrate and label the details of their observation, deeper written comments start to emerge. Not only are we improving their observational skills but also their writing skills.

These resources, which were recommended by a college Earth Science professor, will help me, help my students by modeling what good scientists do.

They will also learn how to capture what they've seen, heard, smell or learned through journaling by using sensory and descriptive details. It's my goal to develop keen observers. I also look forward to sharing these tools and lessons with my K-2 colleagues so we can collectively develop critical thinkers.
