Everyone loves to write with a freshly sharpened pencil. My first grade students are no exception. Every morning when they come to school I am always asked to sharpen their pencils. Unfortunately, I have to say no because the current sharpener I have is broken.
I work in a very underprivileged school where family incomes are very low.
It is a struggle for students to bring in the basic school supplies every year. Sharpened pencils, for example, is a necessity for learning. If students do not have that one basic tool, it is practically impossible for them to do their daily lessons.
My Project
My students love to write but lack the sharpened pencils to write with. Can you imagine 1st grade and no sharpened pencils to write with? Imagine having a broken pencil with no way to sharpen it? We need two pencil sharpeners and boxes of pencils to give us enough sharpened pencils to last the school year. Only then can we hone our writing skills enough to become the next Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, Langston Hughes or Charles Dickens. We are the future poets and novelists of the future. All we need is the supplies to make it happen. Please help!
