What Do We Have in Common With Starfish?

Help me give my students a hands-on opportunity to compare the anatomy of a variety of organisms in an effort to better understand the diversity of life in our backyards and more broadly on our planet.

My Students

In the center of rural America, a classroom is filled with developing young biologists. These teens were biologists prior to entering this room--rooted deeply in modern-day agricultural practices passed down from generation to generation.

Likely, a majority of these biologists will become stewards for acres of farm and ranchlands responsible for maintaining our food supply in the United States for decades to come.

Therefore, it is important they have a strong understanding of ecological processes, human impact and sustainable practices, and the diversity of life.

My Project

Our biology class has spent the previous semester learning about the building blocks of life, cells, and the processes that keep organisms alive. As we enter into our next semester, we begin learning about the diversity of organisms on our planet, how these organisms interact with one another, and how these organisms interact with the abiotic factors of our ecosystems.

The dissection specimen of this project will provide hands-on learning about how structures of organisms help species survive, compete, and reproduce.

With this basis, students will determine the role diversity plays within ecosystems and predict outcomes after disturbances within ecosystems both natural and human induced.
