My Students
Students work in teams throughout the day. They not only obtain knowledge, they develop critical skills involving teamwork, patience, and compassion. These materials will be used to encourage independent group work, allowing students to work together and choose the skills they want to practice.
If we are going to prepare our children for the 21st century workforce, we literally, and figuratively, need to get with the program.
My students are a motivated group of fourth graders. They attend our unique K-12 school in Southern California, with a total population of about 600 kids. Our school motto is: Never Give Up on a Dream. Our school focuses on developing the whole child, teaching not only academics, but also conflict resolution, confidence building, and social awareness. The teachers strive to make our school a place where kids want to be, and are inspired to be self-motivated, life-long learners. Our test scores are on the rise, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. About 80% of my class is on the free or reduced-fee lunch program, and 85% of my students speak English as their second or third language.
My Project
Our school is strapped for cash, just like many public schools throughout the nation. In a perfect world, my students would have access to everything they need throughout the day. Our district has tried, and failed, to provide students with the materials they need to support a full day of learning. This is where you come in. Just like anything in life, knowledge takes practice. Practice, practice, practice! While these additional writing and math materials won't take the place of quality instruction, they will provide our students with the practice they need to master basic skills. These materials (Scholastic Success with Reading and Math) will supplement lessons, providing students with activities to "fill in the gaps" throughout the day. Should students finish work early, they will have these materials available to them, so any excess time is not wasted.
These donations will improve my students' learning experiences.
Exposure to multiple questioning strategies will give them a "leg-up" when confronted with district and state testing, as well as broadening their knowledge base.
