My Students

My students are hardworking learners who strive to do their best in the classroom, their community, and at home. As part of a large district, and with a growing poverty level currently at 61%, our students face many challenges. They rise to them, however, with grace and a hunger for success and knowledge.

Every challenge our school encounters is another opportunity for success.

Teachers and students set a high bar, whether that regards learning standards, expectations, or creation, and students work hard to rise to the occasion.

My Project

To allow our students the opportunity to continue connecting with each other and their community, I am creating a project tied to the content and curriculum of This I Believe. Our hometown is often abbreviated as EVV, and thus This We BelEVV was born.

Our students have been learning from home since mid-March 2020, and this project is geared toward rebuilding their sense of community and strengthening their ability to collaborate.

The first aspect of our project will help students brainstorm ideas using the Post Its and markers; regardless of how we begin the next school year, whether in person or using our virtual meeting space, students will be able to discuss and display their thinking using these materials.

Once students have had the opportunity to successfully brainstorm and collaborate on their ideas, they will begin the process of writing their essays, peer-editing and revising, re-grouping, and researching community members with whom they can connect regarding their passions, and conducting interview podcasts of those community members. Finally, we plan to create bound books of the essays of this class, so that every student matriculates into high school a published author.
