My Students
I teach 2nd grade at a small, suburban school in Washington.
My school is designated as a high-poverty school, with many students receiving free or reduced-priced meals because of their socioeconomic situation.
If you were to come visit, however, you would never know that. You would see students who love learning and want to do their very best.
My classroom of 7 and 8-year-olds is always made up students who have a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. This includes learning support students, English language learners, and academically gifted students. I am here to teach them all and give them the best education!
My Project
When I asked my students what would make their time in the classroom better, they answered, "MORE MOVEMENT!!!" I integrate a lot of movement into my lessons already, but my students told me that they wanted more.
As we brainstormed ways to make this happen, we discovered that there are ways that kids can exercise in the classroom even when they're working on things that are normally considered pretty sedentary, like reading a book or writing a paper.
They decided that they would love to have under-the-desk bikes and an under-the-desk elliptical machine so that even when they're sitting down, their legs can be moving and getting exercise!
They also decided that they wanted some table workstations, such as a cycling workstation and a standing desk with a balance bar that will keep them focused and working on their core strength!
These exercise workstations will be used in all subject areas and the kids will collaborate by collecting data on whether or not the exercise stations help them focus and get more work done or not! The greatest benefit of having theses exercise stations in the classroom is that now, my students will be active and exercising for at least 60 minutes every day, just while they're at school!
They already get 50 minutes of recess every day, and they will EASILY get 10 additional minutes by using these exercise workstations!
I believe that these exercise stations will make a HUGE difference in my students' health and education!
