My Students
Hurricanes and Algebra?...Hmm...My students are bearing the brunt of both. They can prepare for and run away from Hurricanes. However, Algebra they must endure. My goal is to make the adventure as fun and memorable as possible and hope to replace some of the unfortunate memories.
My students attend a great school in Mississippi.
They are wonderful students. They have been through a variety of hardships in their short lives. Hurricanes Katrina, Gustav, and Isaac, have in the last 7 years, torn their worlds apart again and again. The long term effects of the recession have some of them still living in FEMA homes and their parents unable to get back on their feet for a variety of reasons. Most of our careers involve the Gulf of Mexico. The famed BP oil spill has many families still out of work. Even with all of these adult issues, my students are kind, giving, thoughtful and hardworking. They come to school and never mention their home life. They just enjoy the positive and fun atmosphere that our great school provides them. I love my students dearly and I know that you would love them too.
My Project
Algebra is a tough subject to make fun. We play the typical Bingo games and make posters. The students enjoy these, but it kind of gets old after a while. We joined another teacher's class once and the teacher had this quiz bowl set and it changed the atmosphere immediately. It turned the lesson into an interactive battle between classes. It was a great success and I would love to have my own to incorporate this method in my own classroom on a more frequent basis.
I have seen first hand what the quiz bowl game set brings to my students.
I have extremely high hopes that this project will be funded. This school has worked very hard to make learning fun. My students, principal and myself would be extremely grateful for any contribution you could make to help reach our "fun" goal in Algebra 1.
