Hi, I am a Special Education teacher in a self-contained school for children with autism and multiple handicaps. The six children in my class are all essentially non-verbal. They can communicate through gestures, or by pointing to pictures of what they want or need.
Children with autism often think in pictures and spoken language can be difficult for them to understand and for the non-verbal, impossible to produce in some cases. Therefore they need the help of pictures. For example if a child would like a snack, they would be able to choose a picture of the item they would like. If it is the bathroom they need, a picture of the toilet or urinal is what they would need to use. These pictures need to be concrete and literal. A magazine picture of potato chips for example might not replicate exactly what is available to the child at that moment, causing confusion and frustration. The same goes for the toilet, causing a difficult dilemma for the child. Also, as the children in my class are unable to speak, they are not able to tell their families about their day and what they have done. Currently, I am doing a unit with my class about cultural diversity. The first country we are experiencing is Mexico. We have made sombrero's out of newspaper, maracas with paper mache, and made polvorones (Mexican cookies). These are all activities filled with "I can do it!" moments that the children can share with their families in picture form since they don't have the words. It also means the world to the families who are able to see tangible evidence of what their children CAN do and take the focus off of what they are not able to do. I want the children to be able to share these moments with their families. Having access to a digital camera with a printing dock would make this possible. The computer in my classroom is an old computer and is unable to hold the software needed for a digital camera. For these reasons, I am requesting a digital camera with its own printing dock. It would make life a little happier for all involved! Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
