My Students

Technology is a huge part of our lives. Two-year-olds can pick up an iPhone and know how to open it, move the screen over to the games, and start playing Angry Birds. Technology is a vital part of present-day education and my students would benefit greatly from having more at their fingertips.

My students are a lively bunch of first graders who love math!

We are a charter school right in the heart of Washington, D.C. Our first graders are departmentalized, so they get to experience math for over an hour a day. There is no question that they will learn math each and every day. My students are bright, creative, and excited to come to school to learn. Our school serves students from low-income families, and the majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. While our students do not come from the most luxurious lives, our goal is to ensure that school is a safe place, where they come to learn and play, and where they learn how important they are in our society. These students are working so hard everyday to accomplish their goals of going to high-achieving high schools and then onto college.

My Project

iPads are changing education on a daily basis. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of Apps for education that help to make learning fun. In our math class, we can use flashcard Apps, answer test preparation questions, play math game shows, and explore many different elements of math. As we move into geometry, measurement, and fractions, math Apps will be even more handy for the students to really see the concepts they are learning. Since this is the iPad2, we would even be able to video chat with other classrooms and have virtual pen pals! Anything new to the classroom helps students gain interest. This iPad will help students take ownership of their learning by wanting to get involved and invested. There are an infinite number of possibilities that we can take advantage of in our first grade classroom with this iPad.

In the ever-changing, fast-paced world of education, an iPad is a fantastic resource to keep education engaging and fun for children.

This iPad, along with the cover to protect it, and the adapter to project the work on a bigger screen would be life-changing for our math classroom. Thank you for helping out our classroom anyway you can!
