My students come from an array of social, cultural and economic backgrounds. Fifty-four percent of my students come from minority backgrounds, and more than 50% of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Their diverse background means that they don't all come to the classroom with the same knowledge and experiences. It is my job to ensure that all my students, regardless of their background, engage in enriching, educational experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.
My classroom is built around hands-on experiences that allow students to engage in the actual “doing” of science.
This gives students ownership and the drive to succeed. My hope is that through this project, I can obtain supplies to further engage my students in complex science material and give them the drive to continue pushing themselves to learn more.
My Project
The greenhouse and monarch garden play a huge role in our citizen science work around the monarch butterfly. Our classes maintain the monarch garden, grow milkweed from seed (both harvested from existing plants in our garden and purchased seeds), grow pollinator plants (rooted from our garden and purchased seeds), and educate others in the role they can play for the survival of the monarch butterfly. While working in the garden and greenhouse areas, additional picnic table space is needed.
This picnic table will be an extension of the classroom and provide much-needed workspace for students to optimize their time in the garden and greenhouse.
