"We are a Title 1 school with 100% free lunch and 98% African-American population. Title 1 funds are used to secure materials that directly relate to building skills that relate to AYP and NCLB. (With the current reductions in employment, due to the recession, our population of students are farther impacted). This urgency leaves very little funds to spend on "hands-on" activities that develop that sense of inquiry and wonderment in students.
I believe that one of my jobs as a teacher is to help develop students that will become responsible citizens and stewards of the world they live in. One way to develop that level of responsibility is to help students connect to the state that they live in. With that goal in mind I developed an exploration of the 12 eco-regions in Oklahoma and the part each individual student has in saving the environment. My students have concluded this exploration and we have begun working on a schoolyard habitat to bring our learning home.
To complete this project, my students will need gardening tools, seeds, bird feeders, wood, rocks, flower and vegetable seeds, and building tools. Our plans are to plant a flower and a "Three Sisters bed; build a nesting place for birds;a bat house and start a compost bin.
Your help will make it possible for my students to continue to have a hands-on experience in science by creating a wildlife habitat. This will be an experience that my students will remember for a long time and for some of my students it may make the difference between success and failure for them as students and as an adult.
