This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How would I describe such an amazing group of kids??? Well my students are like a big family! They are respectful, trustworthy and kind. Most students have grown up together since kindergarten. They are a wonderful group of students who really stick together and I am happy to part of such a loving family.
A little bit about my school now.
We are a small Title I school, in the South Bronx. The neighborhood is one that low socioeconomic status. As teachers we work with limited staff, space and resources. My students LOVE physical education and we always have a blast even with without the most desirable circumstances.
In my efforts to make physical education as exciting, educational and developmental appropriate, I often have to work in a small space with a very good imagination. One of the amazing aspects of physical education I really like to encourage in my classes is cooperation/teamwork/project adventure type activities. I have seen many leaders and thinkers emerge from my classes. I would love to foster this even more.
My Project
This project is one that is used in so many positive ways. The spider web is an apparatus that is used as a cooperative project adventure activity. Project Adventure game's such as the spider web, are very team and student centered. Unfortunately, it can be costly to invest in. Once they are put in place they can be used in a modified setting for all students, on all levels and abilities.
Physical Education is evolving and becoming more inclusive.
We are a low funded, small school. Our physical education space is very confined. I focus on cooperative, team building and trust activities. In this smaller space we can not do many activities in a safe manner. Project adventure is a unit that does not require a large space but accomplishes so much. Bringing in project adventure type games gives the students a sense of community, friendship and accomplishment. Students are afforded the opportunity to work closely with all their classmates, make decisions without being teacher directed and allow students to emerge as leaders. This allows participation on varies levels to now be leveled when implementing this type of activity. I have seen student emerge very confident and happy which may not be very forth coming when it comes to physical activities, It also promotes critical thinking, communication and problem solving
With all these elements, students are encourage to take control of their thinking process, use their bodies and learn in ways they never thought they could before. It encourages students to think out of the box, which is what we all want our students to do.
Finally, the and the most important to the students is they love it! It's fun, exciting and different then anything they have done in Physical Education.
