What? Alternative Energy Sources and Reading Comprehension
My students need the Britannica Illustrated Science Library, 25 subscriptions to TIME for Kids Magazine, and 3 Power of Science kits, covering Light and Sound, Simple Machines and Electricity.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. A.'s classroom raised $1,097
This project is fully funded
Imagine displaying a solar house before the classroom, and then telling the kids that they will be building that house, once we have read and understood the concept and theory behind its usefulness.
I teach Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies to sixth grade students who are struggling readers, in a self-contained classroom. Our school is currently focusing on Reading Comprehension, utilizing "Readers Apprenticeship" strategies.
Our school corporation currently combines Language Arts with Social Studies in a "Literacy Block" format to aid reading comprehension. I am currently participating in a science research experience for teachers at Notre Dame University, and this experience has encouraged me to propose a change to the "Literacy Block" format.
I believe the students will become better readers who comprehend what they have read if the text being used is about modern-day Science topics of interest to them. For example, Alternative Energy Sources and the Environment are topics that have a high student appeal, and they provide opportunities for hands-on activities and additional comprehensive learning.
The big HOOK for the students will be the hands-on activities, an example of which they will see on display prior to the concept being taught. Your generosity will allow me to provide some of the kits where students will build these models, and reading resources that will allow for comprehension and application of the science concepts.
This combination of hands-on activities and high-interest, visually appealing reading resources will lead to exceptional readers! I will also be searching the internet for additional science resource kits and grants, so that I can consistently apply the format your generosity has allowed across all science curriculum areas.
Our school corporation currently supplies science kits that are outdated, and more importantly, of little interest to the students. Your kindness and generosity as a donor can provide a turning point in 25 kids educational lives. By stepping up and saying, "Yes, I care about your student's lives!", the resources that your commitment will provide will help these children to go to each succeeding year of their educational life as better readers and motivated learners!
