This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What would you do if you had a chance to meet a famous author but hadn't read any of his books? My students have a wonderful opportunity to meet author/illustrator Steve Jenkins, but they need to be exposed to his illustrations and writing. Once they start reading his books, they may never stop.
My students are in second grade at an average sized urban elementary school.
With a free/reduced lunch count of 90%, our school qualifies for Title I assistance. Many of my second grade students come from a low income background. Parents often work two jobs and are not available to take their children to the library or read them a story at bedtime. Once they have more experiences with books at school, many cannot put them down. Lots of them really get excited about certain authors. I want Steve Jenkins to be one of their favorites.
My Project
I have no books in our classroom library written or illustrated by Steve Jenkins. Studying his books would be amazing for my students. It would expose them to a genre of books that they don't normally choose themselves. They will become experts on him through reading books that he has written and looking at pictures he has illustrated. After they become experts, they will have the opportunity to meet and talk with him about those same books.
I can also use the books to teach art techniques. Many books relate to math skills that second graders need. He uses animals in most of his books as well. The uses for his books are limitless. They will be wonderful books to use now and in the future as fun reading and as easy research books. The information about animals can be used to enhance our science curriculum as well.
You can make the difference!
You can help us build our classroom library and become experts on an amazing author/illustrator. Meeting Steve Jenkins will be something that my second graders will remember forever and having his books in our classroom will bond them to this experience even deeper. Help inspire my students to be all they can be by giving them the opportunities that will have the greatest influence in their lives.
